About the Arizona Woodturners Association

Who we are:

The AWA is a proud chapter of the American Association of Woodturners, located in Phoenix, Arizona. We are dedicated to training, preserving and inspiring the art of woodturning. We encourage each of our members also to join the American Association of Woodturners.

We are excited about the recent revival of interest in woodturning. Artists who have been woodturning for some time have been passing on this art to people of all ages and genders. Tool manufacturers and turners have been coming out with a plethora of new tool designs and chucks to make turning easier for anyone. People's imaginations have shown the world that turning is a true and pure form of art.

Learn to turn:

If you ever thought about trying woodturning, we encourage you to contact a local turners association and locate their next meeting. It is generally agreed this is the best way to start this new fascination. It is also highly recommended to join the American Association of Woodturners. Be warned, wood turning it is very addicting. Whether you want to learn woodturning for relaxation or want to make a gallery piece, start with your local woodturning organization and sign up. The information you can gather there is second to none. Let the chips fly!

Important Note:

Please take the time to browse our website. In it you will find pictures of turnings, information on where and when we meet, and links to websites of turners and woodturning tool manufacturers. You are always welcome to contact us with any questions you may have and/or send us information that you think may be of interest to the members of our organization. Our association meets the third Saturday of each month at the Pyle Center in Tempe. The meetings are generally from 12:00pm to 4:00pm unless otherwise noted on our Meetings page. The address for the Pyle Center is:  655 East Southern Avenue, Tempe, Arizona 85282. Our meetings start off with an overview and update from the President and the Vice President, which are followed by a woodturning demonstration that usually lasts for about 2 hours. We have been very fortunate to have many well-recognized turners doing demonstrations for us and we have some members who are known throughout the world as must-see demonstrators.

Beads of Courage

We're asking members to turn lidded boxes for children through the Beads of Courage program.  Through this program children receive unique beads that represent procedures or treatments during a serious illness.  For example, they might receive a red bead for each blood transfusion, a yellow bead for each night in the hospital, a star bead for surgery or a white bead for chemotherapy. Their collection of beads becomes a tangible record of their journey.  You can pick up a ceramic "Beads of Courage" bead to be inserted on the knob of your lid at the next monthly meeting.  Find out dimensions and more information at the Beads of Courage website.
