August 2007 President's message:
The meeting at Yavapai College was well attended and enjoyed by the members of both clubs and their families. A wide variety of turners kept the crowd fascinated throughout the day. The cafeteria served us a nice lunch, and the door prizes were worth the trip. If you were unable to attend this year, do not miss next year.
Although the silent auction was smaller than previous years, it generated $811.00. We raffled one of the lathes Bill Baumbeck donated and that raised an additional $505.00. In all, the combined club donation to the Woodturning Program at the college was $1,316.00, which is the largest donation we have made to date. I am thinking that with a little more participation, we may be able to double that amount in the future (just a thought).
I would like to thank all of the members who participated in the event at the college, and especially to the members who made the event possible. Additionally, a special thanks to Mel and RayAnn Yoder at Timber Woodworking Machine in Mesa, Arizona, for their kind contributions to the event, and Bill Baumbeck of Arizona Silhouette in Yuma, Arizona, for the two lathes he donated to the club. If you are looking for equipment and supplies, please think about these folks first.
The September meeting is just around the bend. Tim Wadley will be our demonstrator. Tim is an accomplished turner, who always presents an exciting program.
We will be entertaining nominations for club officers at the September meeting. This is the time to nominate those members you believe with best serve the club. If you are interested in being nominated, ask someone to throw your name in the ring.
This is all I have…………

August 2007 Vice President’s Message
The dog days of August are truly upon us. If you’re making shavings outside, there is no danger of the wood drying out---just lean over the piece occasionally and give it the old sweat treatment! The July meeting in Prescott provided a welcome respite from the heat and humidity of the Valley. I hope everyone who attended enjoyed it as much as I did. The demonstrators were great, and there seemed to be something for everybody from basic bowls to hollow forms to bottle stoppers. As always, the best part was the camaraderie of spending time with fellow woodturners as they commented on pieces in the instant gallery, or as they discussed different techniques and tools used to achieve similar results while watching the demos. As the saying goes, there’s more than one way to skin a cat. Hmmm. I wonder where that expression originated, but I digress. Thank you to Wayne Wolfe and the PAW folks for all their work setting up the venue. I’m guessing if you had the lasagna for lunch, you weren’t hungry in the afternoon. The lady behind the counter was right---it was really good, but should have come with the warning: “A frightening portion!”
On Saturday, November 3rd, we have invited Stuart Batty to the Valley to conduct a one-day seminar. The seminar will be held in Sun City, and more details will follow concerning the topics to be covered and the cost of the event. If you haven’t seen Stuart, you’re in for a real treat. If you have seen Stuart, you’re in for a real treat again. Note that Stuart’s seminar will not replace our normal meeting on the 17th at the Pyle Center. As always, please monitor the AWA web site for further information on all up-coming events.
Speaking of the Pyle Center, I’m grateful that we have a space to conduct our meetings, and it is free. That said, ever since I heard about the San Diego club that at one time had a permanent facility, I’ve been intrigued with the idea having our own meeting place. I’m not suggesting that we go out and buy a building (unless the club starts purchasing Power Ball tickets and we win), but possibly entering into an agreement where we have a sponsor. What a wonderful thing it would be if we could find a host facility that was conducive to seeing demonstrators, where power wasn’t an issue, and where we could store our lathe (or lathes) and ancillary equipment. I don’t mind doing the legwork, but I need some help from anyone who has some creative ideas on places to contact. For example, does anyone have a buddy who lives at an airpark, has air-conditioned hangar space, and who desperately wants to get into wood turning? Let your minds roam free, and let’s see if the great god of woodturners smiles upon us!
See you in September.

Web Site Information:
Our website
has some beneficial links. Some connect you to local
woodturners and businesses. Others, such as “Buy Tools” and “Arizona
Woodturner’s Merchandise” can benefit the club. When you buy a tool or an
article of clothing at the above mentioned links the club gets a percentage of
the purchase price. We are all looking for good deals on tools and clothes.
What could be better than getting a good item at a fair price and part of the
cost going to your woodturning club?
All pictures taken at our monthly meeting will be
placed in the photo album. Only pictures with a name on the bottom of the
turning and paid members will have pictures placed in the photo album. We can
save each months picture through out the month this way. To see the pictures,
click on the Photo Album link, and when that opens, click on the Gallery link.
These pictures will still be added to your personal photo album.
Our Buy Tools page is still working the same way. If
you are going to purchase a tool, and it is shown on our Buy Tools page. Going
through this area to purchase your tool helps out our club. We get a small
return on each purchase and so far it has been paying for our web site. Keep
up the good work.
Pictures in the Photo Gallery can be enlarged by clicking on them and then
clicking a second time to see the full size picture. Once a quarter, the older
pictures will be deleted to make room for the newer pictures. This helps keep
our web site speed at it's best quality.
You
can now purchase Arizona Woodturners logo items through our products link.
This includes, shirts, sweatshirts, caps and more.
